Dual Language Program

What is the Dual Language Program?

The Dual Language Program is the best educational model that produces graduates who can speak, read, write and understand English and Spanish. There are only 3 non-negotiables of the program:

Program non-negotiables:

  • A minimum of 50% of instruction in Spanish.
  • Strict separation of languages for instruction.
  • A long-term commitment.

What is the instruction like in a Dual Language Program?

A C.B. Jennings, we strive for a 50/50 balanced model, in which classes are comprised of Spanish speakers learning English and English speakers learning Spanish. The students will learn language arts, math, science and social studies in two languages with two partner teachers.  An inherent strength to this model is that both groups of students learn together and reinforce and accelerate the language acquisition process.

What are the program goals?

Dual Language Program goals:

  • Achieve high levels of academic excellence.
  • Develop high levels of proficiency in both languages by the end of grade 5.
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

What does the research say?

  • Students in Dual Language Programs perform at or above grade level on standardized tests when compared to students not in the program, with the added benefit of bilingualism.

  • There are cognitive benefits to learning a second language including the delay of Alzheimer’s disease.  The brains of bilingual children are flexible and require high levels of concentration not typical in monolingual brains.
